Routine, when it is consistent with our evolutionary design: is not a prison, but a direct path to well-being.

The reason why the body functions more efficiently with fixed schedules lies in the deep physiology of the circadian rhythm, the endocrine system, the autonomic nervous system, and internal molecular synchronization.

What is the reason why the organism is more efficient when it sets fixed times for each activity? For example: for sleeping, exercising, studying, eating; what happens at a chemical, biological, neurological level?

Evolutionary coherence: what biology asks for

For millions of years, humans had a daily cycle of light, activity, and food that was highly predictable. The entire physiological system evolved to respond to regularity. Modern chaos (screens, rotating shifts, eating at night) goes against this and generates disease.

The human body is an anticipatory system. It functions better if it knows what is coming. When there is regularity, all systems (brain, hormones, organs, muscles) align, prepare, and coordinate. This translates into:

Better energy.

Better sleep.

Better digestion.

Greater mental clarity.

Less stress.

Circadian Rhythm: the great orchestrator.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), located in the hypothalamus, is the "master clock" that coordinates the peripheral clocks throughout the body (liver, heart, muscle, intestine, etc.).

When you have fixed schedules, this clock anticipates what is coming and synchronizes hormonal, thermal, digestive, and metabolic rhythms so that they are prepared in advance.

If you eat or sleep at erratic times, the SCN loses its ability to anticipate, and this generates internal desynchronization, inflammation, and lower performance.

Hormonal level: chemical anticipation.

With fixed schedules, the body pre-produces hormones necessary for each activity:

Melatonin (for sleep) is released in the absence of light, in advance if the routine is predictable.

Cortisol (alertness and energy) begins to rise before you wake up.

Insulin and digestive enzymes are secreted before eating if the body “knows” that a meal is coming.

Endorphins and adrenaline are prepared if exercise takes place at the same time every day.

This avoids sudden spikes and makes the entire system more efficient.

Neurological level: synaptic efficiency

The central nervous system acquires plasticity when a routine is established:

Stable neural circuits are formed that require less energy to activate if the stimulus is predictable (e.g. studying, exercising, sleeping).

This makes it easier to enter a state of flow.

Activity in the limbic (emotional) system is reduced and activity in the prefrontal system (planning, concentration, learning) increases.

Metabolic level: energy conservation

When there is order, the body spends less energy compensating for errors. If you eat at the same time every day, the metabolism does not need to release cortisol or adrenaline to balance an unexpected drop in glucose.

The liver is already prepared to release glucose if necessary.

The intestine regulates absorption better and the microbiota becomes balanced.

The body enters an anabolic or catabolic state depending on the moment, without interference.
